Kristin Reviews Thor Ragnarok

Thor Ragnarok

As a regular ol’ moviegoer, I’m happy to write a short and concise review of Thor: Ragnarok, and here it is:

It’s delightful. Go see it.

As a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I’m disappointed.

If you’re looking for an incredibly fun, easy to watch, hilarious superhero movie with plenty of super hot actors being super while looking hot, rush to the cinema posthaste.

If you’re looking for a far more coherent and enjoyable Thor movie than the first two, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

If you’re hoping to see a Thor movie that fits the legacy of Thor, as established in the comic books and expanded/massaged by Marvel in the film franchise, you will conclude that Thor: Ragnarok was created by a team armed only with a Cliffs Notes summary of Thor’s lineage and backstory … possibly one with a few pages missing.

That’s not to say the movie doesn’t have a lot going for it. It’s incredibly funny and lighthearted, with a good balance of drama, humor, and action. The story is easy to follow, the fight scenes are well-choreographed and exciting, and it has Loki in it, which alone makes it worth the ticket price (Dr.Strange also makes an appearance, so if seeing Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch on the same screen at the same time is on your bucket list, you need wait no longer).

In fact, if you ignore the fact that Thor acts a lot more like Peter Quill than Thor throughout, it’s a pretty satisfying movie.

The thing is, Thor isn’t Peter Quill. He’s not ordinarily the biggest smartass in the room … except, apparently now he is. And Chris Hemsworth makes an adorable smartass, so you'll totally want to roll with it. But for a Marvel fan, the whole movie feels a little off balance, like Thor got a personality transplant, and nobody noticed.

Grades assigned as follows:
  • The movie gets an A for humor and watchability.
  • Consistent Thor characterization: C
  • Hiddleston as a complex (and badass) Loki: A+
  • Exploration of Thor's and Loki's sibling relationship: A+
  • Cate Blanchett's portrayal of Hela: A
  • Super cool Valkyrie: A.
  • Thor with short hair: A BIG A+ and an "mmm, yes, please"
  • Marvel choosing to unveil the biggest reveal of the film in the previews: A gigantic and angry F (I'll have more to say on that subject – just you wait.)
Thor: Ragnarok is unlikely to be nominated for any Oscars, unless it gets a shout-out for visual effects. But that's okay. Not every movie is meant to be a "masterpiece."
