The Academy Announces Its Diverse New Membership

On June 29, 2016, the Academy announced that it would be inviting 683 professionals to join its ranks.

According to Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the 683 invitees “represent the best in our global film community.”

However, as you will recall, Boone Isaacs made a pledge during the 88th awards presentation to make the Academy’s membership more diverse. Thus, it is impossible to say whether the majority of the individuals on this year’s invitation list are actually qualified for Academy membership, or if they were invited solely because of factors irrelevant to their experience and skills as moviemakers.
