Kristin Reviews Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)

Birdman

Birdman is brilliantly executed in every way.

Director Alejandro González Iñárritu has crafted a motion picture I find myself tempted to describe as flawless. He does so by combining an intense (and meta-fabulous) script; a collection of impeccable performances; cinematography that relies upon long, intimate, uninterrupted takes; and a unique soundtrack that uses percussion rather than orchestral music or pop songs to support the film’s story and visual style.

Birdman deserves every nomination it received.

It is disappointing that the Academy has determined that Antonio Sanchez’s percussion score for the film is ineligible for an award due to technicalities in the rules. Birdman would not be the same film if it had a different soundtrack. A strong argument could be made that Sanchez's score demonstrates exactly the kind of unique creativity that deserves an Oscar.
