Kristin reviews Gravity

Many critics - Steve and I included - become somewhat jaded when it comes to watching movies. We've seen so many films, and evaluated so many scripts and performances and editing choices, that we start to see every movie as an opportunity to pick something apart.

Sometimes, it's nice to go to a movie and just have fun. Gravity isn't a movie – it's a ride. A fun and exciting and breathtaking ride that asks nothing of its viewers but to sit back and enjoy. Which I did. At only 90 minutes, and with only two characters and a simple premise, Gravity is a masterfully crafted, entertaining win. I don’t expect it to win a lot of awards because its competition comes in the form of movies about slavery and the Holocaust and AIDS, but it doesn’t even matter. It’s a fun way to spend an hour and a half, and I think, in this case, that’s enough.

As a side note, every studio today seems to think, "if 2D is good, 3D must make it better." This is generally untrue. Gravity is the only 3D film I've seen for which the 3D effect is more than just a gimmick - in Gravity, the 3D effect is actually part of the movie, like a character or a key set piece – it is a critical part of the experience. Don't watch this one on DVD. Go to the theater and spend the extra couple of bucks to see it in 3D.
