Arbitrage

Arbitrage has shown up on some critics’ prediction lists as a potential Oscar vehicle for Richard Gere. It’s an entertaining enough movie about Robert Miller (Gere), a successful hedge fund broker (I’m guessing on his title here) who makes a series of stupid choices that threaten to destroy his family, his fortune, and his reputation. Because all of the choices Miller makes are self-serving and generally unethical, Miller is not a sympathetic character. His efforts to juggle his affairs in order to avoid the consequences for his behavior are interesting enough to watch, but the character isn’t one of those “bad guys we love to hate,” or anything. He’s just pretty much an asshole. If Gere is nominated, it will be because he had no worthy competition.
