The Sound Awards 101

Sound Awards

Every year, one of my friends asks me to explain the difference between the 2 sound awards that are handed out each year. I will now do so here so you know what you’re voting for in your annual office pool.

Sound Editing

This category recognizes the achievements of the sound creators. In years past, the award title was actually “Sound Effects Editing,” which is probably more accurate. In 1998’s winner: Saving Private Ryan, the sound of the bullets wizzing around, the boats in the water, and the bombs going off are what’s being recognized. Foley work would fall under this category, but the award is usually given to the Supervising Sound Editor.

Sound Mixing

This category is more aptly titled, as it recognizes the achievement of mixing all the sounds together. In years past, this was just referred to as “Best Sound” which is confusing, so I’m glad they changed it. Sound volume and the combination of dialogue, effects, and soundtrack are being recognized in this category. The dynamic crescendo that occurs as Jaws attacks the boat is what gave it the award that year.
